HMCS DeWolf Honours Bedford Native



The first Harry DeWolf –class Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ship will be launched by Irving Shipbuilding Inc. of Halifax in 2018. The lead ship of this class will be the HMCS Harry DeWolf, named for Vice –Admiral Harry DeWolf a native of Bedford, NS.

Vice –Admiral Harry DeWolf, often known by his nickname “Hard-Over-Harry,”was decorated for outstanding service throughout his naval career. He might be best known, however, for his service during World War Two. In 1943, he took command of HMCS Haida and participated in sinking 14 enemy ships. Vice –Admiral Harry DeWolf was awarded a Distinguished Service Order (DSO) for gallantry, a Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) for courage and skill in action against German destroyers, and for bravery, courage and determination in the face of the enemy was twice Mentioned in Dispatches.

The Fort Sackville Foundation is pleased to welcome Commander Corey Gleason, Commanding Officer HMCS Harry DeWolf to speak about the role of the ship on April 3, at 7pm, at LeBrun Centre, 36 Holland Ave, Bedford. Material honouring Vice – Admiral Harry DeWolf will be on display.

All are welcome.  Free admission.  Donations accepted. Refreshments to follow.
